My Aquaponics Journey
When I first discovered aquaponics in 2007, I was excited by its potential.
Here was a way to grow fresh vegetables and raise fish together using far less water than traditional gardening.
It seemed like the perfect solution.
Then I started learning.
Books explained parts of the process.
Videos explained other parts.
Forums often gave completely different advice.
Everyone seemed to have a different opinion, and much of the information assumed you already understood the basics.
Like many beginners, I learned the hard way that you don't know what you don't know.
My first aquaponics system failed.
Looking back, it wasn't because aquaponics was difficult.
It was because nobody had explained the ecosystem in a simple, practical way.
That experience shaped everything I've taught since.
Aquaponics doesn't need to be complicated. It simply needs to be explained clearly
Built on Aquaculture, Not Guesswork
One thing I noticed early was that much of the aquaponics information available focused heavily on plumbing and construction.
Very little explained the biology that actually keeps a system healthy.
I wanted to understand more than how to connect pipes.
I wanted to understand the fish.
That led me to formally study aquaculture and commercial aquaponics, learning about fish health, water quality, filtration, beneficial bacteria and aquatic ecosystems.
Along the way I volunteered at three major public aquariums around Australia, continuing to build and refine my own backyard systems while learning from experienced aquarists and aquatic professionals.
I also had the opportunity to design and build educational aquaponics displays for the Marine Discovery Centre on the Central Coast, helping introduce visitors to aquaponics through practical, working systems.
Those experiences reinforced something I still believe today.
The healthiest aquaponics systems aren't usually the most complicated.
They're the ones where the person building them understands the ecosystem.
One of my earliest discoveries was just how productive aquaponics could be. My first successful crop was broccoli, grown with silver perch.
Simple Doesn't Mean Basic
One of the biggest misconceptions about aquaponics is that complicated systems must be better.
I don't believe that's true.
Simple doesn't mean cutting corners.
Simple means understanding what really matters and removing everything that doesn't.

The goal isn't to build the biggest system.
It's to build a system you understand.
Because once you understand the principles, you can adapt them to almost any backyard

The real magic happens inside the ecosystem.
Understanding that ecosystem changes aquaponics from a collection of pipes into a living, balanced environment.
Healthy fish produce nutrients.
Beneficial bacteria convert those nutrients into a form plants can use.
Plants help clean the water before it returns to the fish.
When people understand that relationship, aquaponics suddenly becomes much less confusing.
Instead of memorising instructions, they begin understanding why each part of the system matters.
